Royal Palace at Mount Schachen - via Partnachklamm gorge and Kälbersteig
This tour will first take you through Partnachklamm gorge and then on royal paths to the royal palace (Königshaus) at Mount Schachen, surrounded by the idyllic alpine world, that once enchanted King Ludwig II.
Only about 20 minutes further on your walk, you will see a geological highlight in the shape of Partnachklamm. In 1912 this gorge was declared a sight of outstanding natural beauty. With its wild and roaring waterfalls, rapids and rock pools, it never fails to amaze holidaymakers and hikers.
But the most impressive sight of this tour is still to come: The Königshaus (royal palace) at Mount Schachen. It was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869 and completed in 1870 in its location at an altitude of 1866 meters. The façade is kept surprisingly modest, in the style of a so-called "Swiss house". In stark contrast to the modest exterior of the wooden building is the luxurious “Moorish Hall”, which occupies the entire upper floor. You will find a fantastic array of colors ranging from gold and red to blue. Every year on the 25th of August in the seclusion of the mountains, the king celebrated his birthday in this Turkish hall, furnished with divans and a fountain in its center. Not far from the palace there is a botanical garden, which was planted in 1900. There are plenty of exotic plants to see here. Alongside Bavarian Alpine flowers you will find plants from North America, Asia, the Carpathian Mountains and the Caucasus.
