Up to the King’s place – ride your mountain bike up to the royal hunting lodge at Mount Schachen
This tour will take you on royal paths through enchanted mountain hamlets
to the royal hunting lodge at Mount Schachen, surrounded by the idyllic alpine world, that once enchanted King Ludwig II of Bavaria.
You will start your tour in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, passing the Olympic Ski Stadium with the new ski jump built in a futuristic architectural style, which hosts the annual new year leg of the Four Hills ski jumping competition. You will ride across beautiful Alpine pastures and sleepy mountain hamlets to the village of Elmau. After approximately half the way, you will reach the Wettersteinalm mountain hut, the summer pastures of young cattle. The most impressive sight of this tour is still to come: The royal hunting lodge Königshaus at Mount Schachen. It was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869 and completed in 1870 at an altitude of 1866 meters. The façade is kept surprisingly modest, in the style of a so-called "Swiss house". In stark contrast to the modest exterior of the wooden building is the luxurious “Moorish Hall”, which occupies the entire upper floor. You will find a fantastic array of colors ranging from gold and red to blue. Every year on the 25th August in the seclusion of the mountains, the King celebrated his birthday in this Turkish hall, furnished with divans and a fountain in its center. Not far from the palace there is a botanical garden, which was planted in 1900. There are plenty of exotic plants to see here. Alongside Bavarian Alpine flowers you will find plants from North America, Asia, the Carpathian mountains and the Caucasus.
